Why start treating for bugs at the beginning of summer – no later

 In Extermination, Tips & Tricks

Ah, beautiful summer. The warm weather, the BBQ lawn parties, the swimming pool… and the myriads of bugs! Unfortunately, wasps, ants, cockroaches, mosquitoes and all sorts of other creepy crawlies and stinging annoyances love frolicking under the warm rays of the sun just as much as we do, making our life harder in the process.

It is often said that “prevention is better than cure,” and this remains true when it comes to pest infestations. Unfortunately, people tend to only start worrying about these intruders when they’re already out of control. Instead of putting it off until it becomes too late, it’s better to start preparing now and have less headaches (not to mention many other aches) in the future.

A successful prevention program consists of three steps:

  • Eliminate anything that could cause bugs and other vermin to flock to your home. Ants, wasps, cockroaches, fruit flies and many other bugs are attracted to food. If you avoid leaving any food lying around – be it on the table, in the trash bin or around your house – the pesky intruders are far less likely to show up.
  • Block any convenient entrances for pests. Some bugs may be able to reproduce inside your house, but others, like ants, usually nest outside. If you find them in your house, there may be cracks and holes in your home that they can use to infiltrate. In some cases, you may be able to find those yourself simply by following an ant trail. On the other hand, if the entrance is well-hidden, an exterminator may be able to find it and block it off for you.
  • Carry out a perimeter treatment. In order to prevent insects from so much as approaching your house, a perimeter treatment with biodegradable products can be key. Again, you can carry out this treatment yourself, but if you would like to save yourself the hassle and be on the safe side in regards to the chemicals used, an exterminator could do it for you as well.

It is important to keep in mind, however, that preventive measures only work if taken before the pests have taken up residence in your house. If you already have an infestation on your hands, you will need to resort to harsher extermination methods, which will likely involve spraying for pests inside your house. If, like most homeowners, you would rather not let it come to that, it is important to take preventive measures before summer is in full swing, as by that point, the invaders have probably already found a way into your home.

If worse does come to worst, it is important to rely on a competent exterminator who will be able to put a stop to your infestation in a safe and efficient manner.
